Memorial Day in Lowell and Chelmsford

Lowell Cannabis Staff

The two communities observe the holiday differently: Lowell, with the civic weight of a historic mill city, and Chelmsford, with the quieter, neighborhood-scale traditions of a smaller town. But both bring genuine character to the long weekend. Lowell Cannabis is the practical stop between all of it, with a team that can help you find what fits your weekend plans before you head out.

Historic Lowell, Massachusetts at night. Lowell is known as the cradle of the industrial revolution in the United States and many of the city's historic sites have been preserved by the National Park Service.

Memorial Day Events and Places to Visit

Lowell Cemetery is one of the Merrimack Valley’s most historically significant burial grounds and a site for wreath-laying and remembrance ceremonies during the holiday. It’s also an active cemetery, with self-guided tours available. Tours are suitable for all ages.

Lowell Memorial Auditorium is a historic downtown venue hosting performances and seasonal shows throughout the spring and summer. Worth checking the calendar for any Memorial Day weekend programming.

The Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center is open for canal-system tours, ranger programs, and exhibits on the city’s industrial heritage. A good addition to a downtown morning that connects Lowell’s history to the holiday’s broader theme of service and community.

Chelmsford’s annual Memorial Day observance rotates each year between two locations, North Chelmsford and Chelmsford Town Center, keeping the commemoration rooted in both halves of the community. The parade steps off at 10 AM and flows into a tribute program held at whichever common anchors that year’s event. Local veterans organizations lead the charge: Alberton W. Vinal American Legion Post 313 represents North Chelmsford, while Merrimack Valley Vietnam Veterans Inc. takes the helm for Town Center years. In 2025, the ceremony comes to Chelmsford Town Center, and the whole community is welcome to show up and pay their respects.

The Market on the Common at Chelmsford Town Common kicks off its seasonal run each year right around Memorial Day weekend, every Saturday from late May through mid-October, 11 AM to 2 PM, with local farmers, artisan crafters, and food vendors. It’s the kind of low-key community market that rewards an easy Saturday morning.

The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail connects Chelmsford and Lowell via a paved multi-use path through wooded terrain. Ideal for a holiday morning bike ride or walk before the afternoon fills up.

The Lowell Heritage State Park has riverside walking and biking paths, picnic areas, and kayak access on the Merrimack River alongside views of the historic mill district.

Shedd Park at Rogers Street in Lowell is a large neighborhood park with playgrounds, tennis courts, open lawn, and picnic-friendly green space.
